What can scraping do for you?

Scraping is part of a data journalist’s routine. There’s an inexpensive, point-and-click way to collect unstructured data and turn it into spreadsheets, or harvest an image table into Excel-readable formats. Bring your own laptop, with admin rights, to this scraping without coding session. PCs only. WIndows only, no Macs.

*We recommend that you pre-download the scraper from http://www.heliumscraper.com/ to avoid delays in class, but no more than two days in advance, as the license-free version has a very short life.

You've got a great story tip. You're excited to begin your investigation. Then you discover that there is no data on what you're investigating. Or just as bad, the data, such as it is, is still on paper! Don't fret. Learn how to address these data problems and still do data journalism that gives you original research and analysis for your investigations.
